“I Wasn’t Afraid of Waking Up Again. I Was Afraid This Was Becoming My Life.”
2:47 a.m.
Adewale opened his eyes.
He didn’t need to look at the clock. His body already knew.
Again.
Beside him, his wife was warm beneath the covers. The room was dark. The whole house seemed to be resting. Everyone except him.
He pulled the blanket away. The cold floor touched his bare feet. A few quiet steps through the darkness. The bathroom door. And then… waiting.
Standing there half-awake, Adewale felt something heavier than tiredness. A thought he had been trying not to think:
“What if this isn’t temporary?”
What if tonight becomes tomorrow night? And the night after that? What if this is simply my life now?
He walked back to bed and carefully slipped beneath the covers, trying not to wake his wife. But sometimes she moved. She knew. And somehow that made the silence feel even heavier.
Adewale closed his eyes. His body was back in bed. His mind wasn’t.
Morning came, but the night seemed to follow him into the day. The tired eyes. The heavy body. The patience that disappeared a little faster.
And slowly, almost without noticing, he began making small adjustments. Before a long drive: “Will there be a bathroom?” Before going somewhere unfamiliar: “Where is the bathroom?” Before settling comfortably into a chair: “Should I go first?”
One question. Then another. Then another. Until something that was supposed to be a small part of his life started quietly deciding how he lived it.
And that frightened him.
Because Adewale remembered another version of himself. The man who could climb into bed and simply sleep. The man who could leave home without planning around a bathroom. The man who could sit beside his family, laugh, talk and be completely there — without part of his mind waiting for the next interruption.
He hadn’t realized how precious “normal” felt until normal started slipping away.
It wasn’t really the bathroom he missed. It was freedom. It was rest. It was waking up and feeling that his body belonged to him — instead of feeling as though his routine was slowly beginning to belong to the problem.
And late one night, staring into the darkness after yet another trip, a question hit him harder than all the others:
“If my world has already started getting smaller… how small will I allow it to become?”
That was the moment Adewale stopped telling himself: “It’s nothing. I’ll just live with it.”
Because deep down, he didn’t want to learn how to live around the problem. He wanted to feel like himself again.
